Having fallen for the fallacy that there’s profit in market share, hospitals have gorged on acquisitions and on the employment and other financial alignment of physicians.
Many physicians have been willing participants through belief that there’s safety in hospital employment.
But it’s becoming evident that physician employment leads to losses and that financially integrated care delivers neither better care nor lower costs.
And now, technology is about to moot many of the reasons for a hospital’s existence, with patient monitoring and an increasing number of diagnostic and surgical procedures about to move out of the hospital setting and into outpatient facilities . . . and even into patients’ homes.
This presents a bleak, and much smaller, future for hospitals. It presents huge challenges to physicians who’ve built their practices around the traditional role of hospitals — and it presents huge opportunities to physicians and other healthcare providers willing to participate in a truly new healthcare economy.
