It seems as if many physicians have an “ear worm” — you know, when a song keeps playing and playing and playing in your mind.
What song you ask? “Time Is On My Side” by the Rolling Stones.
Time is on my side, yes it is.
Time is on my side, yes it is.
Or, maybe it’s not.
The market’s changing rapidly – government intervention, national and regional groups, hospital employment models.
It doesn’t matter which one of these will succeed or if none of them will succeed, or if there’s some other business or delivery model that will ascend like a phoenix from their ashes.
The fact remains that you must gain a modicum of control over your own future.
Your trade or specialty groups are largely failing at that leadership. Many on the speaking circuit are focusing on battles already lost or, at best, are preparing for wars based on old risks and on how wars have been fought in the past.
The bottom line is that responsibility for your future falls back on you, on your group, on your group’s leadership to coordinate. Yes, you can obtain expertise to help you gain control, a very different proposition from believing that you can hand over control to someone else – that’s simply building someone else’s future.
The best time to take action was years ago. The second best time is right now. It turns out that time isn’t on your side. But at least it’s a catchy tune.
